The company:Employing 21,000 people in Italy and other countries, Barilla, “Italy’s Number One Pasta,” located its first U.S. facility in Ames, Iowa, in 1998. The plant employs 120 people who produce millions of pounds of pasta daily at the 500,000 square foot facility. Millions of pounds of durum wheat per year are used to turn out the 22 types of pasta produced at the Ames facility. Site requirements:When considering a U.S. facility, location was a key factor driving Barilla’s decision. The company required access to durum wheat, access to markets, a 60-mile proximity to Des Moines, rail service and an available labor force. Site solution:Barilla found what they were looking for in the 240-acre site in Ames, Iowa, located on Interstate 35 with a Union Pacific line running along the site. Alliant Energy assisted the project by constructing a substation near the Barilla facility and agreeing to share in the cost of any necessary underground electrical service. |
